Volvo of Charleston sponsors Teacher of the Year.
" I believe it is necessary to integrate instruction, create a classroom community, and teach using small group and individualized instruction in order to provide the best education for each child."
- Cassie Norvell, K-2 Teacher, Jennie Moore Elementary School – winner of the Teacher of the Year award. Volvo of Charleston is proud to support Ms. Cassie Norvell as the Teacher of the Year. Ms. Norvell understands the need to provide the gift of time to learn and develop outside of the lock-step approach required of most young students. She implemented multiage classes at Jennie Moore ES so that young children can learn at their own pace, in their own style, and at their own developmental level with integrated learning stations through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic activities. One of the primary tenets of Ms. Norvell's philosophy is the importance of both group work and individualized instruction. Children of mixed age groups collaborate and older students practice leadership skills and model helping and sharing for younger children. Ms. Norvell has taught siblings of one family over several years: "By incorporating our classroom experiences into this family’s at-home discussions, the siblings have developed a bond that transcends the three-year experience of each individual child."
As a teacher leader of first-year teachers, Ms. Norvell is aware of the increasing gap between non-Title I schools and Title I schools, where many inexperienced teachers are employed. She believes one resolution is to expand quality early childhood education to parents and to at-risk two-and-three-year olds. She participated in a National Board Summit discussion of tools to recruit cadres of highly qualified teachers to teach in at-risk schools. Ms. Norvell extends her love of teaching young children to her church's Sunday school program. Her volunteerism in the community stems from fund-raising activities in her classroom through teaching her students the importance to be a part of something bigger than themselves and of helping those in need. The economics standards in social studies are taught through creating authentic sales experiences with profits donated to charities of the students' choice. "While it may be easy to sit on the sidelines and criticize the public education system, it takes great character to go out and do something to help Charleston County children succeed."

Volvo S80 earns "2007 TOP SAFETY PICKS" rating
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the Volvo S80 with the 2007 TOP SAFETY PICK Award for superior overall crash protection. The S80 qualifies because it's rated “Good” in the Institute's front, side, and rear tests and has electronic stability control as standard equipment. IIHS Ratings of Good, Acceptable, Marginal, or Poor are based on a crash test in which the tested vehicle is struck in the side at a speed of 31 mph. Volvo has always been a leader in protective safety and the Volvo S80 is no exception. A tailor-made safety cage and space-saving powertrain combine to minimize the intrusion into the cabin in the event of a collision. The S80 3.2 features a 235 Hp 3.2L six-cylinder engine, available only in front-wheel drive, and has an estimated fuel economy of 16 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The high-end S80 AWD features a 4.4-liter engine which delivers power through Volvo's Instant Traction all-wheel drive (AWD). The S80 AWD has an estimated fuel economy of 15 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The S80 is the first Volvo to feature adaptive cruise control with Collision Warning and Brake Support designed to warn the driver and lessen the severity of an impact in a collision. Volvo will also be introducing the Personal Car Communicator which not only acts as a keyless starter, but also as an interactive security system and personal safety device.
